As expected, the amount of storage required will determine which solution you will choose; in general, hard disk-based devices have the best combination of price and storage capacity. Usually, once we meet the growing storage needs, we start looking for new hard drives. Suddenly, the 500 GB that comes with the PC is becoming less and less suitable for this task. The rule of thumb is to choose a hard drive that requires twice the capacity; this should be adapted to future needs, especially considering that upgrading an external storage device is not as easy as on a desktop PC. The best thing you can do is to replace your drive with a drive with more storage capacity.
This is probably the most important consideration. How fast is the drive you get? You can use a 3TB hard drive, but if it has a lower maximum RPM and/or older models of USB or Thunderbolt, it will only slow down your speed.
Higher RPM means faster transfer of data to or from the drive. Encrypting data is a good idea if the data you store on an external drive is sensitive in any way. There are many drives that are compatible with software encryption solutions and are great for most people, but for those who take data security more seriously, you want to find a drive with hardware encryption. If you are very concerned about security, you can even choose a physical security system like pin-code input.
There are currently three main connections on the market – eSATA, USB and Firewire; USB 2.0 is the most popular version at the moment, with excellent transfer speed and quasi-universal compatibility; eSATA is the newest child in the city, offering better performance than USB and Fewer resources. Firewire is often downgraded to niche and high-end platforms such as content creation but offers the best of both worlds and excellent compatibility with Mac environments.
The place where you use the storage device can also determine which solution is best for you; are you a laptop, a remote worker? Then, it’s best to get a USB flash drive or a portable hard drive solution, many of which don’t require an external power supply. Also, if you’re a Mac enthusiast, buying a Firewire model makes more sense because it will give you more scalability.
Of course, if the hard drive is unreliable, these specifications are not important, so the reliability of the hard drive is an important thing. In terms of reliability, SSDs and hard drives fail in different ways and for different reasons.
